New Development at Old Pleasant Hills Golf Course

TAYLOR LAMBERT November 12, 2024

You remember the Old Pleasant Hills Golf Course in East San Jose? Closed in 2004, it's sat there since, over-growing, fenced, and not available to the public. The location is right next to Cunningham Lake and the new CaliBunga (which I also hear is pretty sweet, but haven't been yet). In 2018 policy was passed to develop the old golf course and it’s shaping up to be a pretty exciting project! Still a ways to go until shovels are in the ground but here’s the scoop:

Neighbors Have a Say

Folks in Districts 5 and 8 helped shape the vision for the site, asking for more small businesses like restaurants, shops, and maybe a mid-sized grocery store instead of big office buildings or hotels. Love that they’re trying to keep it local!

What’s in the Works

Developers are looking at nearly 4,000 homes and over 785,000 square feet of commercial space. Details are still being worked out, but the plan is to include community amenities and eco-friendly features. After all, golf courses are gigantic, there's a lot of room over there.

Don’t Forget the Greens

With less green space in East San Jose compared to other parts of the city, community advocates are pushing to make sure future plans leave plenty of room for parks and gathering spots.

A Focus on Affordable Housing

The San Jose City Council just approved some guidelines for what could be built there, and they’re prioritizing affordable housing—more than the usual city requirements.

It’s still early days, but it’s exciting to see this long-closed space finally coming to life. What do you think—does this kind of project fit the vibe of East San Jose? Let me know your thoughts!
