Good Samaritan Hospital has been in the news recently as the San Jose hospital on the Los Gatos border continues efforts to improve their facility. In late October the San Jose Planning Commission recommended against the hospital’s proposed expansion, a project that would add over 1 million square feet, including two new wings and parking structures.
The reason for this decision? Concerns over Good Samaritan’s parent company, HCA Healthcare. Critics point to HCA’s history of cutting services when they’re not profitable, which has left parts of San Jose underserved. For example, HCA closed the Regional Medical Center’s maternity ward, NICU, and other critical services. This has raised fears similar cutbacks could happen here. Good Samaritan’s Chief Operating Officer insists the expansion is essential for meeting earthquake safety standards and delivering high-quality care. However, local advocates are calling for guarantees that HCA will protect all vital services, especially for our most vulnerable neighbors.
The Planning Commission’s vote was 7-1, and the final call will now go to the San Jose City Council. Anyone here use Good Sam as their hospital? Do you feel the expansion is necessary? We'll find out pretty soon what the City Council says, it'll be interesting to see how it all unfolds!
