Development Plans in West/South San Jose

TAYLOR LAMBERT October 8, 2024

A couple of interesting developments in San Jose caught my eye this week, and I thought I'd share them with you!

First up, plans for a new Costco in West San Jose are moving forward. The San Jose City Council will make a final decision on Oct. 22. While the project has Planning Commission approval, some residents have raised concerns about traffic and safety, especially near Prospect High School. On the flip side, supporters see it as a great opportunity to boost the local economy with new jobs and tax revenue. If approved, the Costco will be located on prospect and will have rooftop parking, and will include some local infrastructure upgrades.

In other news, Kaiser Permanente is planning to rebuild its 50-year-old hospital in South San Jose.  The project, approved by the San Jose Planning Commission, will create a 685,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility to meet new seismic standards. The new facility will be twice the size and increase its number of beds from 247 to 303, with construction expected to start later this year. The current hospital will stay open during the five-year build, and while there are concerns about tree removals and construction noise, the upgraded hospital is expected to offer huge benefits for the community’s health care services in the long run.
