Do You Put Food Scraps Down the Garbage Disposal? Stop!

TAYLOR LAMBERT September 30, 2024

Here's a simple homeowner tip – one that I learned the hard way!

Did you know that your kitchen sink's garbage disposal isn't meant to be your second trash can? I know it can feel tempting to toss all your scraps down there, but in reality, you're supposed to avoid letting much of anything go down the sink in the first place. The garbage disposal is more of a last resort, there to help prevent clogs, but it can't handle everything.

A drain screen is your best friend in the kitchen! It catches all the little scraps and saves you from a potential plumbing headache. Let me tell you, we learned this lesson the hard way when our kitchen drain clogged. The plumber came out, snaked the drain, and fixed it... but then a few weeks later, it clogged again! It got so bad the plumber had to hydrojet the line all the way to the main drain – and trust me, it wasn’t cheap or fun (especially with family visiting that week!).

Now we’ve got a drain screen, and for the last two years, we haven’t had a single clog. Problem solved! I'm sure our drain pipes are thanking us.

So, take it from me: Save yourself some hassle (and money!) by using a drain screen and keeping most of those scraps out of the disposal. Your pipes will thank you!  Here's an Amazon link, a $4 piece of metal mesh can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars down the road.

Be well!  Have a great week ahead!
