Red Light Cameras in San Jose: What to Know Now

TAYLOR LAMBERT October 6, 2025

Quick heads-up, you may want to hit the brakes (literally).

San Jose has rolled out a new pilot program with red-light cameras at a few busy intersections. The goal is safer streets, but for drivers, it could also mean some pricey tickets if you’re not paying attention.

So, where are the cameras going?

1.  Leigh Ave & Parkmoor Ave

2.  Monterey Rd & Branham Ln

3.  South 3rd St & Keyes St

4.  Bascom Ave & Camden Ave

These spots were chosen because they’ve had a lot of red-light runners and crashes in the past. Basically, the city’s starting where the problem is biggest.

What happens if you get caught?

1.  A ticket shows up in your mailbox.

2.  Running a red light = $486 fine (ouch).

3.  Rolling right turn without fully stopping = $234 fine.

4.  You could also get a point on your driving record.

5.  They’re starting with a short warning period before the real tickets kick in.

How long is this going on?
It’s a one-year pilot beginning right now. After that year, the city will decide if more cameras should pop up around town.

So, if one of these intersections is on your daily route, you’ll definitely want to take that extra second and stop fully at the light. Safer for everyone, and way cheaper than a $486 surprise in the mail!

Thought I’d share since this is one of those “good to know before it happens” kind of things.  Be safe out there!
