First off, NOTHING IS FINALIZED yet! So I'm not going to give you a list of schools just to freak everyone out!
The San Jose Unified School District (SJUSD) is currently considering a plan to close several elementary schools as part of a "long-term strategy called Schools of Tomorrow.” The latest proposal includes closing around five schools and relocating one program, possibly as soon as the end of the 2025–2026 school year (that's this year, folks!). It’s important to note that there has been strong feedback from parents and the community, so this plan is evolving with the help of your input!
So why is this happening?
The biggest factor is declining enrollment. Over the past several years, fewer families with school-aged children have been living in the area, a trend we've seen across Silicon Valley. As enrollment drops, school districts receive less state funding, which creates budget challenges. The fewer kids your school enrolls, the less money your school makes.
The district says it is looking to consolidate schools to reduce costs and better allocate resources across fewer, more fully enrolled campuses.
Understandably, this has sparked concern among families. Many parents worry about losing neighborhood schools, potential boundary changes, and how this could impact their children’s daily routines and overall experience. Community meetings have been very active, and the district is still working through feedback before making final decisions.
From a real estate perspective, this is something to be aware of. School boundaries and school assignments can play a role in how buyers evaluate neighborhoods. In the short term, there may be some uncertainty, but the long-term goal is to create a more stable and sustainable school system.
Bottom line: This is going to happen, it's just a matter of which schools will close (or "consolidate" if you want to use the friendlier term). So get out there and let your voice be heard!
