School Closures in San Jose - Berryessa School District

TAYLOR LAMBERT December 17, 2024

Since October, there's been multiple follow-up meetings regarding school closures in the Berryessa Union School District. As of last week, the School Consolidation Advisory Committee (SCAC) has concluded their deliberations. The respective ranking of Cherrywood, Toyon, Laneview, Summerdale, and Ruskin are now the new order of which elementary is most likely to get closed. Weeks ago, Ruskin Elementary School was the recommended choice from the Board to get chopped; however, after weeks of protest from nearby homeowners, Ruskin seems to be saved at this point (for now). The committee also suggested Sierramont & Piedmont Middle School as their top choices for school conversion to TK-8th grade option.

The Board is expected to meet tomorrow to finalize this critical decision. Whatever they decide on, I'm certain it will face many backlashes. For example, Cherrywood Elementary being on the top of the list doesn't necessarily mean it could easily be shut down because it is the assigned school in the District for enrolled Dual Immersion program individuals. Re-establishing the program setting as well as relocating the enrolled students and teachers is not an easy task. On the other hand, schools such as Toyon, Laneview, and Summerdale are under Title I status. They're meant to provide additional educational support through federal funding to students who may need extra help to reach academic standards. So removing any of these schools could set a huge setback and deter the quality of education for the enrolled kids.

Needless to say, there ain't any good options here! Hundreds of kids and families will be disappointed, disjointed, and pretty pissed, I'm sure.

While a decision is expected by this year, nothing will go into effect until late 2025 to the early 2026 school year. In the meantime, I'll continue to keep you posted!
