Birds are chirping outside my window right now and my weather app says it's going to be 78-80 degrees for a couple of days next week. Spring babyyyyyy!!
Welcome Spring with a short and simple to-do list as your house has endured some rain this winter. Check and improve the following:
Cleaning gutters and downspouts is essential for maintaining a healthy foundation. Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow, potentially leading to roof damage and leaks. By cleaning them out, you can avoid the growth of mold, mildew, and pests that can thrive in stagnant water. Really, you should be doing this at least twice a year. Pro tip, buy a 10-foot ladder, go in on it with a neighbor or two, and an electric blower. It takes me maybe 5-10 minutes for me to clean my gutters.
This is often highly overlooked! Due to fluctuation of weather, sealant over time wears down and creates gaps around window frames. Get a silicone caulking tube or two from your local hardware store and seal those voids. It reduces energy deficiency and mitigates moisture penetration. Pro-tip, or just buy it off Amazon, make sure you get the tube and the caulking gun applicator. Don't go super cheap on the caulk quality, get some good stuff. Watch a YouTube video if you don't know how to caulk something, takes a little effort but you should be able to do it.
Go around the exterior of your house and inspect for soft spots. Regardless of the material, the exterior frame of your house should not be forming soft spots or bubbles. If it is, water has entered the house's framing. Get connected with a qualified contractor to repair it before it rots further which can lead to structural damage. Pro tip, there is no pro tip here, you're literally just walking around your house.
Your roof always receives the worst beating whenever it's rainy season. Get your roof inspected to see if it requires any patch up. A few hundred bucks on inspection can save you whole lot of trouble as roof replacement can be pricey. Pro tip, make sure you go up into the attic next time it's raining, get the ladder, pop open the attic access, get a high powered flashlight and look for any wet spots or dripping. Just do it.
