Berryessa Update: Flea Market Moving?

TAYLOR LAMBERT September 16, 2024

Have you guys ever been to the Berryessa Flea Market? It's pretty fun to swing by on the weekend to see if you can unbury any treasures.  We've been a few times with the kids. BUT, the Berryessa Flea Market is facing a relocation due to upcoming development plans.

San Jose officials are actively searching for a new location for the flea market, as the current site will soon be developed into a transit-oriented project with homes and mixed-use space. The city has evaluated two potential sites: a former Sears location near Eastridge Mall and a former landfill in South San Jose. However, both options present significant challenges. The Sears site has a high leasing cost, while the landfill would require expensive environmental remediation.

Despite these hurdles, the market's existing location is set to close by January 1, 2026, so you have some time to make your visit. The city is working to find a suitable alternative, but progress has been slower than hoped (and when it comes to the City or County, what isn't slower than expected? lol). There are concerns about the financial support needed for a new market, and city officials have indicated that they will not subsidize the new location.

Sooooo, will the flea market go away forever?  Time will tell!

Vendors at the Berryessa Flea Market will receive a one-year notice before being required to move. In the meantime, the market remains open, and vendors are encouraging the community to visit and support local businesses as the relocation process continues.

If you have any questions, let me know!

Oh, and mortgage rates are still below 6%!  We'll see if rates are cut further next week!
