Summer’s just around the corner, and it’s a great time to knock out a few home maintenance tasks before the heat really kicks in. A little prep now can help keep you—and your home—cool and safe.
First up, the dryer vent. When was the last time you cleaned that out? If it’s been years, there’s probably a serious buildup of lint in there, which can actually be a fire hazard. Try to get in the habit of clearing the lint trap after every load, and consider scheduling a full vent cleaning once a year. A pro can usually handle it for under $200.
Next, your AC unit. This is probably going to be your best friend over the summer, so make sure it’s in good shape. If you haven’t had it checked recently, now’s the time. A technician can inspect for leaks, adjust airflow, and replace the filter to keep everything running smoothly and efficiently.
Don’t forget about your gutters and downspouts. Even though we usually think of cleaning them during the rainy season, it’s just as important before summer. Dry debris stuck in there can actually increase wildfire risk. Clear them out, and double-check that you’ve got some defensible space around your home—it can really help slow or stop a fire from spreading to your property.
Lastly, take a look at your windows and doors. If you’ve got air leaks, they can drive up your cooling costs fast. Sealing them with weather stripping, caulk, or expanding foam is a cheap, easy fix that can make a big difference in keeping the cool air in.
Doing just these few things can really boost your home’s energy efficiency and help reduce fire hazards. Stay cool out there! Summer's coming, babyyyyyyy!!
